2016 – MX-5 – Body and Accessories

WINDSHIELD INSTALLATION

WARNING:

  • Using piano wire with bare hands can cause injury. Always wear gloves when using piano wire.

1. Remove the sealant and dams on the glass side along the entire perimeter of the glass using a utility knife. (When reusing the windshield)

2. Clean and degrease an approx. 50 mm {2.0 in} wide strip along the perimeter of the windshield.

3. Inspect the glass for cracks. If it is cracked, chamfer it using sandpaper.

4. Apply the dams. (When reusing the windshield)

5. Apply primer to the area of the glass shown in the figure.

  • Follow the primer product instructions for the drying time.

CAUTION:

  • To prevent weakening of the primer adhesion, keep the bonding surface free of dirt, moisture, and grease. Do not touch the surface with your hand.

NOTE:

  • Apply primer to the hollowed marks in the ceramic coating.

6. Cut away the old sealant using a utility knife so that 1—2 mm {0.04—0.07 in} thickness of sealant remains along the perimeter of the frame.

7. Clean and degrease along the perimeter of the bonding area on the body.

8. Apply primer to the area of the body shown in the figure.

CAUTION:

  • Using the dowel for applying primer, apply primer to the area shown in the figure.

  • To prevent weakening of the primer adhesion, keep the bonding surface free of dirt, moisture, and grease. Do not touch the surface with your hand.

9. Apply sealant to the area of the glass surface as shown in the figure.

10. Insert the positioning pins to the body and install the windshield.

11. Allow the sealant to harden completely.

NOTE:

  • Follow the sealant product instructions for the drying time.

12. Install the following parts:

a. Auto-dimming rearview mirror (with auto-dimming rearview mirror) (See AUTO-DIMMING REARVIEW MIRROR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

b. Rearview mirror (without auto-dimming rearview mirror) (See REARVIEW MIRROR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

c. Rain sensor (with auto light/wiper system) (See RAIN SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

d. Forward sensing camera (FSC) (with FSC) (See FORWARD SENSING CAMERA (FSC) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

e. Sensor cover (with FSC) (See SENSOR COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

f. A-pillar garnish (See A-PILLAR GARNISH REMOVAL.) (See A-PILLAR GARNISH INSTALLATION.)

g. Windshield garnish (See WINDSHIELD GARNISH REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

h. Front header trim (See FRONT HEADER TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

i. Female wedge (See FEMALE WEDGE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

j. A-pillar trim (See A-PILLAR TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

k. Cowl grille (See COWL GRILLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

l. Wiper arm and blade (See WIPER ARM AND BLADE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

13. Verify that the gaps between the A-pillar garnish and windshield, between the windshield garnish and windshield, and between the cowl grille and windshield are within the ranges shown in the figure.

14. Connect the negative battery cable. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION.)

15. If the rain sensor is replaced, perform the sensitivity setting procedure for the auto lights. (See RAIN SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

16. Perform the forward sensing camera (FSC) aiming in the following cases.(See FORWARD SENSING CAMERA (FSC) AIMING.)

  • Windshield is replaced

  • Windshield is reused and forward sensing camera (FSC) or forward sensing camera (FSC) clips are replaced
