Purpose\/Function<\/p>\n

\u2022 The steering input force, generated when the driver operates the steering wheel, is transmitted to the steering gear.<\/div>\n

Construction<\/p>\n

\u2022 The steering column and shaft consists of the steering column with a built-in Electric Power Steering (EPS) mechanism and the intermediate shaft.<\/div>\n
\u2022 As a result of impact absorbing mechanisms on the steering column and intermediate shaft, when a collision occurs, the steering shaft effectively absorbs the impact energy that would be transmitted to the driver, thereby reducing injury.<\/div>\n
\u2022 Due to the adoption of a tilt\/telescope mechanism for the steering shaft on all vehicles, operability has been improved.<\/div>\n

EPS mechanism<\/p>\n

\u2022 Based on the signals from the torque sensor, the vehicle speed signal input from the DSC HU\/CM, and the engine rotation speed signal input from the PCM, the EPS control module (CM) drives the EPS motor and transmits the assist torque to the intermediate shaft via the deceleration mechanism.<\/div>\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n

Energy absorbing system<\/p>\n

\u2022 At the moment of a collision, when impact energy (first stage impact) is input from the vehicle front due to the rearward collapse of the steering gear, the intermediate shaft contracts to absorb the impact from the driver. (Section X in the figure)<\/div>\n
\u2022 If the driver’s body contacts the steering wheel (second stage impact), the E\/A plate slides along the fastening part (area A in figure) of the adjusting lever or the upper shaft slides into the press-fit part (area B in figure) of the E\/A plate. As a result, the upper shaft contracts and absorbs the impact to the driver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 The steering wheel can be moved in the up\/down and forward\/backward direction when the adjusting lever is pressed towards the front of the vehicle to release the lock of the tilt\/telescope system.<\/div>\n
\u2022 The tilt\/telescope mechanism has a movement range of 45 mm {1.8 in}<\/span> (tilt)\/ 70 mm {2.8 in}<\/span> (telescope) and can be adjusted, without steps, to anywhere in this range.<\/div>\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n\n\n\n
