Preconditions
• During cylinder deactivation control
Malfunction determination period
0.5 s period
Drive cycle
• 2
Self test type
• CMDTC self test
Sensor used
• A/F sensor
Fail-safe function
• Inhibits the cylinder deactivation control.
Vehicle status when DTCs are output
• Not applicable
Possible cause
• Switchable HLA malfunction
• OCV for No.1 cylinder deactivation malfunction
• OCV for No.4 cylinder deactivation malfunction
• Intake valve and exhaust valve for No.1 cylinder stuck open malfunction
• Intake valve and exhaust valve for No.4 cylinder stuck open malfunction
• Engine oil solenoid valve malfunction
• Engine oil malfunction
― Use of unspecified engine oil
― Engine oil leakage
― Low engine oil pressure
― Engine oil runners are clogged or have leakage
• PCM malfunction

System Wiring Diagram

Function Explanation (DTC Detection Outline)

• If both the intake valve and exhaust valve for the deactivated cylinders open mistakenly, the intake air flows to the exhaust pipe and the A/F in the exhaust gas changes to lean. If a large A/F fluctuation during cylinder deactivation is determined, the PCM determines that both the intake valve and exhaust valve for the No.1 or 4 cylinder are open, and stores a DTC.

Note
• Recording can be facilitated using the screen capture function of the PC.
Go to Troubleshooting Diagnostic Procedure to perform the procedure from Step 1.

Troubleshooting Diagnostic Procedure

Intention of troubleshooting procedure
• Step 1
― Verify engine oil level.
• Step 2
― Verify the OCV for No.1 cylinder deactivation installation condition.
• Step 3
― Verify the OCV for No.4 cylinder deactivation installation condition.
• Step 4
― Perform a unit inspection of the switchable HLA.
• Step 5
― Verify if the intake valve and exhaust valve for the No.1 cylinder are not stuck open.
• Step 6
― Verify if the intake valve and exhaust valve for the No.4 cylinder are not stuck open.
• Step 7
― Perform a unit inspection of the engine oil solenoid valve.
• Step 8—10
― Perform an engine oil related inspection.
• Repair completion verification
― Verify that the primary malfunction is resolved and there are no other malfunctions.

1
PURPOSE: INSPECT ENGINE OIL LEVEL
• Switch the ignition off.
• Is the engine oil level sufficient?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Add genuine motor oil.
Perform the “ENGINE OIL DATA RESET” and perform the repair completion verification.
2
PURPOSE: VERIFY IF OCV FOR No.1 CYLINDER DEACTIVATION IS INSTALLED CORRECTLY
• Verify the OCV for No.1 cylinder deactivation installation condition. (See OIL CONTROL VALVE (OCV) FOR CYLINDER DEACTIVATION INSPECTION [SKYACTIV-G (WITH CYLINDER DEACTIVATION (US))].)
• Is the installation condition normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Correctly install the OCV for No.1 cylinder deactivation and perform the repair completion verification.
3
PURPOSE: VERIFY IF OCV FOR No.4 CYLINDER DEACTIVATION IS INSTALLED CORRECTLY
• Verify the OCV for No.4 cylinder deactivation installation condition. (See OIL CONTROL VALVE (OCV) FOR CYLINDER DEACTIVATION INSPECTION [SKYACTIV-G (WITH CYLINDER DEACTIVATION (US))].)
• Is the installation condition normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Correctly install the OCV for No.4 cylinder deactivation and perform the repair completion verification.
4
PURPOSE: INSPECT SWITCHABLE HLA FOR MALFUNCTION
• Is the part normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Clean or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification.
5
PURPOSE: INSPECT CONDITION OF INTAKE VALVE AND EXHAUST VALVE FOR No.1 CYLINDER
• Inspect the condition of the intake valve and the exhaust valve for No.1 cylinder.
• Are the intake valve and the exhaust valve for No.1 cylinder stuck?
Yes
Clean or replace the stuck valve and perform the repair completion verification.
No
Go to the next step.
6
PURPOSE: INSPECT CONDITION OF INTAKE VALVE AND EXHAUST VALVE FOR No.4 CYLINDER
• Inspect the condition of the intake valve and the exhaust valve for No.4 cylinder.
• Are the intake valve and the exhaust valve for No.4 cylinder stuck?
Yes
Clean or replace the stuck valve and perform the repair completion verification.
No
Go to the next step.
7
PURPOSE: INSPECT ENGINE OIL SOLENOID VALVE FOR MALFUNCTION
• Is the part normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification.
8
PURPOSE: INSPECT IF INSUFFICIENT HYDRAULIC PRESSURE CAUSED BY USE OF UNSPECIFIED ENGINE OIL

Repair completion verification 1
PURPOSE: VERIFY THAT VEHICLE IS REPAIRED
• Install/connect the part removed/disconnected during the troubleshooting procedure.
• Clear the DTC recorded in the memory. (See CLEARING DTC.)
• Replicate the vehicle conditions at the time the DTC was detected using the following procedure.
― Start the engine and warm it up completely.

Warning
• While performing this step, always operate the vehicle in a safe and lawful manner.
• When the M-MDS is used to observe monitor system status while driving, be sure to have another technician with you, or record the data in the M-MDS using the PID/DATA MONITOR AND RECORD capturing function and inspect later.
