Details On DTCs

Description

Engine oil temperature sensor circuit range/performance problem

Detection condition
Determination conditions
• During the 10 min after the engine is started, the engine oil temperature does not increase above 0.9 °C {2 °F}.
Preconditions
• Before starting the engine, leave the vehicle with the engine turned off for 6 hours or more.
• The following DTCs are not detected:
― Engine oil temperature sensor: P0197:00 and P0198:00
Drive cycle
• 2
Self test type
• CMDTC self test
Sensor used
• Engine oil temperature sensor
Fail-safe function
• Not applicable
Vehicle status when DTCs are output
• Not applicable
Possible cause
• Low engine oil level
• Engine oil temperature sensor/engine oil pressure sensor connector or terminals malfunction
• PCM connector or terminals malfunction
• Engine oil temperature sensor incorrect installation
• Engine oil temperature sensor malfunction
• Use of unspecified engine oil
• PCM malfunction

System Wiring Diagram

• Not applicable

Function Explanation (DTC Detection Outline)

• If the engine oil temperature detected by the engine oil temperature sensor is not rising 0.9 °C {2 °F} or more during a 10 min period after the engine is started, the PCM determines an engine oil temperature sensor malfunction and stores a DTC.

Repeatability Verification Procedure

1. Start the engine and leave it idling for 10 s.
2. Switch the ignition off.
3. Leave the vehicle for 6 hours or more.
4. Start the engine and leave it idling for 11 min.

1
PURPOSE: RECORD VEHICLE STATUS WHEN DTC WAS DETECTED TO UTILIZE WITH REPEATABILITY VERIFICATION
• Record the freeze frame data/snapshot data.

Note
• Recording can be facilitated using the screen capture function of the PC.
Go to the next step.
2
PURPOSE: VERIFY RELATED REPAIR INFORMATION OR SERVICE INFORMATION AVAILABILITY
• Verify related Service Bulletins, on-line repair information, or Service Information availability.
• Is any related Information available?
Yes
Perform repair or diagnosis according to the available information.
• If the vehicle is not repaired, go to the next step.
No
Go to the next step.
3
PURPOSE: VERIFY ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR INPUT SIGNAL
• Start the engine and idle it.
• Access the ENG_OIL_TEMP PID using the M-MDS. (See PID/DATA MONITOR INSPECTION.)
• Is the PID value within specification?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to Troubleshooting Diagnostic Procedure to perform the procedure from Step 2.
4
PURPOSE: VERIFY CONNECTOR CONNECTIONS
• Start the engine.
• Access the ENG_OIL_TEMP PID using the M-MDS. (See PID/DATA MONITOR INSPECTION.)
• Does the PID value fluctuate when the following connectors are shaken?
― Engine oil temperature sensor/engine oil pressure sensor
― PCM
Yes
Repair or replace the applicable wiring harness or connector parts.
Go to Troubleshooting Diagnostic Procedure to perform the repair completion verification.
No
Go to Troubleshooting Diagnostic Procedure to perform the procedure from Step 1.

Troubleshooting Diagnostic Procedure

Intention of troubleshooting procedure
• Step 1
― Verify engine oil level.
• Step 2—3
― Perform an inspection of the engine oil temperature sensor/engine oil pressure sensor and PCM-related connectors.
• Step 4—6
― Perform an engine oil related inspection.
• Repair completion verification
― Verify that the primary malfunction is resolved and there are no other malfunctions.

Step

Inspection

Action

1
PURPOSE: INSPECT ENGINE OIL LEVEL
• Is the engine oil level sufficient?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Add genuine motor oil.
Perform the “ENGINE OIL DATA RESET” and perform the repair completion verification.
2
PURPOSE: INSPECT ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR/ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SENSOR CONNECTOR FOR MALFUNCTION
• Inspect the applicable connector and terminal. (See CONNECTOR INSPECTION.)
• Are the connector and terminal normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification.
3
PURPOSE: INSPECT PCM CONNECTOR FOR MALFUNCTION
• Inspect the applicable connector and terminal. (See CONNECTOR INSPECTION.)
• Are the connector and terminal normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification.
4
PURPOSE: VERIFY IF ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR/ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SENSOR IS INSTALLED CORRECTLY
• Is the installation condition normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Correctly install the engine oil temperature sensor/engine oil pressure sensor and perform the repair completion verification.
5
PURPOSE: INSPECT ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR FOR MALFUNCTION
• Is the part normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
