Purpose

• The Smart Brake Support (SBS) warns the driver using the warning indication in the active driving display or multi-information display and warning alarm sounds when the front radar sensor, ultrasonic sensor and forward sensing camera (FSC) detect a vehicle ahead, pedestrian or bicycle, and if there is the possibility of a collision .
• If the possibility of a collision increases, it operates the brakes automatically to decrease the damage from the possible collision.

Warning
• The Smart Brake Support (SBS) performs the brake control (SBS brake), however, it is not a system which guarantees collision prevention under all conditions. Because deceleration by the brake control (SBS brake) is limited, always verify the safety of the surrounding area and keep a safe distance from a vehicle ahead or a pedestrian.
• Object is vehicle ahead:
― The Smart Brake Support (SBS) does not operate when the vehicle speed is less than approx. 4km/h {2.5mph}
• Object is pedestrian:
― The Smart Brake Support (SBS) does not operate when the vehicle speed is less than approx. 10km/h {6.2mph}
• The Smart Brake Support (SBS) system operates in response to a vehicle ahead or a pedestrian. The system does not operate in response to obstructions such as a wall, 2-wheeled vehicles, or animals.
• Do not apply stickers to the windshield surface around the forward sensing camera (FSC). Application of even transparent stickers will cause the Smart Brake Support (SBS) system to operate incorrectly, which could result in an accident.
Caution
• Always use tires for all wheels that are of the specified size, and the same manufacture, brand, and tread pattern. If such improper tires are used, the Smart Brake Support (SBS) system may not operate normally.
• Do not use tires with significantly different wear patterns on the same vehicle. If such improper tires are used, the Smart Brake Support (SBS) system may not operate normally.
Note
• The Smart Brake Support (SBS) is a system for assisting driver operations. Accordingly, if the conditions for the Smart Brake Support (SBS) are met, or even when the Smart Brake Support (SBS) is operating, if the driver operates accelerator pedal sharply, the driver’s operations take precedence and the brake control (SBS brake) operation is stopped temporarily.
• In the following cases, turn the system off to prevent an unexpected operation.
― The vehicle is being towed or when towing another vehicle
― The vehicle is on a chassis roller
― When driving on rough roads such as in areas of dense grass or off-road
• If the clutch pedal is not depressed when the vehicle is stopped by the SBS brake operation, the engine stops (MTX).
• If the vehicle is stopped by the SBS brake operation and the brake pedal is not depressed, the SBS brake is automatically released after about 2 seconds.

Function

• The Smart Brake Support (SBS) has the following functions:
― Smart Brake Support (SBS) warning which the warning alarm sounds and the warning indication flashes in the multi-information display and active driving display when the front radar sensor and forward sensing camera (FSC) detect a vehicle ahead or a pedestrian, and the body control module (BCM) determines that there is the possibility of a collision with them.
― When the Driver Monitoring (DM) system determines that the driver is not paying attention to the road using the driver monitoring camera and it determines that there is the possibility of a collision with an obstruction, the Smart Brake Support (SBS) activates the collision warning earlier than normal. (Vehicle with Driver Monitoring (DM))
― Brake prefill which reduces the clearance between the brake pads and the disc plate when the front radar sensor, ultrasonic sensor and forward sensing camera (FSC) detect a vehicle ahead or a pedestrian, and the body control module (BCM) recognize the vehicle approaching them to enable brake force generation immediately when the brake is operated.
― Brake control (SBS brake) which operates the automatic brakes when the front radar sensor, ultrasonic sensor and forward sensing camera (FSC) detect a vehicle ahead or a pedestrian, and the body control module (BCM) determines that there is the risk of a collision. In addition, when the driver depresses the brake pedal, the brakes are applied firmly and quickly to assist.

Operation

• If the front radar sensor, ultrasonic sensor and forward sensing camera (FSC) detect a vehicle ahead, pedestrian or bicycle, and the body control module (BCM) recognize that the vehicle is approaching another vehicle ahead, pedestrian or bicycle, the body control module (BCM) sends a Smart Brake Support (SBS) warning request signal to the instrument cluster and active driving display, and a brake prefill request signal to the DSC HU/CM. At the same time, the body control module (BCM) outputs the warning sound signal to the Notification and Warning Speaker (Front).
• The instrument cluster displays the Smart Brake Support (SBS) warning on the multi-information display based on a Smart Brake Support (SBS) warning request signal.
• The active driving display displays the Smart Brake Support (SBS) warning based on a Smart Brake Support (SBS) warning request signal.
• The DSC HU/CM performs brake prefill based on a brake prefill request signal.
• After the DSC HU/CM performs brake prefill, if the driver does not perform an avoidance maneuver and there is the possibility of a collision, the body control module (BCM) sends a brake control (SBS brake) request signal to the DSC HU/CM to perform the brake control (SBS brake). At the same time, the body control module (BCM) outputs the warning sound signal to the Notification and Warning Speaker (Front) and the Notification and Warning Speaker (Front) sounds a warning.
• The Smart Brake Support (SBS) system is available when all of the following conditions are met:
― The Smart Brake System (SBS) system is not turned off.
― Object is vehicle ahead:
• The vehicle speed is approx. 4km/h {2.5mph} or more
― Object is pedestrian or bicycle:
• The vehicle speed is approx. 10km/h {6.2mph} to 80km/h
― The DSC is not operating.
Note
• The Smart Brake Support (SBS) system will operate even if the DSC OFF indicator light is illuminated after the DSC is stopped by operating the DSC OFF switch. If the Smart Brake Support (SBS) system operates while the DSC has been stopped, the DSC becomes operational and the DSC OFF indicator light turns off.
• The Smart Brake Support (SBS) system may not operate normally under the following conditions:
― If there is the possibility of hitting only a part of a vehicle or obstruction ahead.
― The vehicle is driven at the same speed as the vehicle ahead.
― The accelerator pedal is depressed sharply.
― The brake pedal is depressed.
― The steering wheel is being operated.
― The selector lever is being operated.
― The turn signal lever is being operated.
― When the vehicle ahead is not equipped with taillights or the taillights are turned off at night.
― The vehicle posture is abnormal due to the load
― The vehicle is turning
― The vehicle is driving on the winding road
― Sudden interruption
― The vehicle is driving on the repeated uphill or downhill road
― The vehicle is driving on the bad road or unpaved road
― When warnings and messages, such as a dirty windshield, related to the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) or front radar sensor are being displayed on the multi-information display.
• For the following types of detectable objects, the Smart Brake Support (SBS) system may operate.
― Objects on the road at the entrance to a curve (including guardrails and snow banks).
― Vehicles coming in the opposite lane while making a right turn or rounding a curve.
― When crossing a narrow bridge.
― When passing under a low gate or through a tunnel or a narrow gate.
― When entering an underground parking area.
― Metal objects, bumps, or protruding objects on the road.
― The vehicle suddenly comes close to a vehicle ahead.
― When driving in areas where there is high grass or forage.
― Animals, wall, standing trees or similar objects.
• If the body control module (BCM) determines that there is the possibility of a collision based on the information detected by the front radar sensor, ultrasonic sensor and the forward sensing camera (FSC), such as the distance between the vehicle ahead, pedestrian or bicycle and the difference in vehicle speed, it changes the mode in the order of “Warning/Brake prefill”, “Warning/Gentle brake”, and “Warning/Main brake” to prepare for the possible collision.
Note
• The mode does not always change in the order of “Warning/Brake prefill”, “Warning/Gentle brake”, and “Warning/Main brake”. The warning may be skipped and the braking performed depending on the situation.

• When the front radar sensor, ultrasonic sensor and forward sensing camera (FSC) detect a vehicle, pedestrian or bicycle, it sends the object information (1) to the body control module (BCM).
• When the body control module (BCM) determines that there is the possibility of a collision, it send a brake warning request signal (2) to the instrument cluster and active driving display, and a brake prefill request signal (2) to the DSC HU/CU. At the same time, the body control module (BCM) outputs the warning sound signal to the Notification and Warning Speaker and the Notification and Warning Speaker sounds a warning.
• When the instrument cluster receives a brake warning request signal (2), it indicates the Smart Brake Support (SBS) warning on the multi-information display (3).
• When the active driving display receives a brake warning request signal (2), it indicates the Smart Brake Support (SBS) warning (3).
• When the DSC HU/CM receives a brake prefill request signal (2), it operates the pump motor to activate the pump (3) so that the brake fluid pressure is lead to the caliper piston (4) and the brake pads are kept near the disc plate.
• As a result, if the driver realizes that he/she is approaching a vehicle ahead, pedestrian or bicycle and depresses the brake pedal, or if the driver does not perform an avoidance maneuver and the automatic brakes are operated, the brake force is generated immediately and the braking distance is reduced.

• If the driver does not perform an avoidance maneuver under a warning mode/brake prefill operation condition and the vehicle further approaches the vehicle ahead, pedestrian or bicycle the body control module (BCM) sends the gentle brake control request signal/the main brake control request signal (1) to the DSC HU/CM.
• The DSC HU/CM receives the gentle brake control request signal/the main brake control request signal (1), it energizes the linear control solenoid valve to switch the hydraulic pressure circuit and increase the brake fluid pressure. As a result, gentle braking/main braking is performed (2).
• While the brake control (SBS brake) is performed, brake light signal (2) is sent from the DSC HU/CM to the electrical supply unit (ESU) and the brake lights are turned on (3). The electrical supply unit (ESU) sends the brake light condition signal (3) to the DSC HU/CM.
Gentle brake mode
• Based on the information regarding the distance and difference in vehicle speed with a vehicle ahead, pedestrian or bicycle from the front radar sensor and forward sensing camera (FSC), the body control module (BCM) sends a gentle brake control request signal to the DSC HU/CM.
• When the DSC HU/CM receives a gentle brake control request signal, the DSC HU/CM energizes the linear control solenoid valve to switch the hydraulic pressure circuit and increase the brake fluid pressure. As a result, gentle braking is performed.

am3zzn00008874
Main brake mode
• From gentle brake mode condition, if the vehicle further approaches the vehicle ahead, pedestrian or bicycle and the body control module (BCM) determines that avoiding a collision is difficult, the body control module (BCM) sends a main brake control request signal to the DSC HU/CM and the mode changes to the main brake mode.

Note
• The mode may change directly to the main brake mode without entering the gentle brake mode.
• The DSC HU/CM increases the pump motor output according to the deceleration level requested by the main brake and deceleration request signal, and increases the brake fluid pressure more than in the gentle brake mode to generate a greater brake force.
