Verify that the battery is fully charged. (See <a href=\"SM352781\">BATTERY INSPECTION<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>            2. The starter is normal if it rotates smoothly and without any noise when the engine is cranked.<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>If the starter does not operate, inspect the following:<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<ul type=\"square\">\n<li>\n<p>Remove the starter, and inspect the starter unit. (See <a href=\"SM352792\">STARTER REMOVAL\/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G 2.0]<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Inspect the related wiring harnesses, the push button start, and the transaxle range sensor.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>          <a name=\"id0119h780030002\" id=\"id0119h780030002\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>No-load Test<\/h4>\n<p>            1. Verify that the battery is fully charged. (See <a href=\"SM352781\">BATTERY INSPECTION<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>            2. Connect the starter, battery, and a tester as shown in the figure.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AC3UUW00000739.GIF\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"absmiddle\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AC3UUW00000739.GIF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>            3. Operate the starter and verify that it rotates smoothly.<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>If the starter does not rotate smoothly, inspect the starter unit.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>            4. Measure the voltage and current while the starter is operating.<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>If not within specification, replace the starter. (See <a href=\"SM352792\">STARTER REMOVAL\/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G 2.0]<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n                <b>Starter no-load test voltage<\/b><\/p>\n<li>\n<p>11 V<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n                <b>Starter no-load test current<\/b><\/p>\n<li>\n<p>90 A or less<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>          <a name=\"id0119h780030003\" id=\"id0119h780030003\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Magnetic Switch Operation Inspection<\/h4>\n<p><a name=\"id0119h780030004\" id=\"id0119h780030004\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h5>Pull-out test<\/h5>\n<p><b><span class=\"c1\">NOTE:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>Depending on the battery charge condition, the starter motor pinion may rotate while in an extended state. This is due to current flowing to the starter motor through the pull-in coil to turn the starter motor, and does not indicate an abnormality.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>            1. Verify that the starter motor pinion is extended while battery positive voltage is connected to terminal S and the starter body is grounded.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6XUW00002344.GIF\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"absmiddle\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6XUW00002344.GIF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>If the starter motor pinion is not extended, repair or replace the starter.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>          <a name=\"id0119h780030005\" id=\"id0119h780030005\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h5>Return test<\/h5>\n<p>            1. Disconnect the motor wire from terminal M.<\/p>\n<p>            2. Connect battery positive voltage to terminal M and ground the starter body.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6XUW00002345.GIF\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"absmiddle\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6XUW00002345.GIF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>            3. Pull out the drive pinion with a screwdriver. Verify that it returns to its original position when released.<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>If it does not return, repair or replace the starter.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>          <a name=\"id0119h780030006\" id=\"id0119h780030006\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Pinion Gap Inspection<\/h4>\n<p>            1. Pull out the drive pinion with the battery positive voltage connected to terminal S and the starter body grounded.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6XUW00002344.GIF\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"absmiddle\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6XUW00002344.GIF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b><span class=\"c1\">CAUTION:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>Applying power for more than 10 s can damage the starter. Do not apply power for more than 10 s.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>            2. Measure the pinion gap while the drive pinion is extended.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6ZZW00002377.GIF\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"absmiddle\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6ZZW00002377.GIF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>If not as specified, adjust with an adjustment washer (between drive housing front cover and magnetic switch).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n                <b>Starter pinion gap<\/b><\/p>\n<li>\n<p>0.5\u20142.0 mm {0.02\u20140.07 in}<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>          <a name=\"id0119h780030007\" id=\"id0119h780030007\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Starter Inner Parts Inspection<\/h4>\n<p><a name=\"id0119h780030008\" id=\"id0119h780030008\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h5>Armature<\/h5>\n<p>            1. Verify that there is no continuity between the commutator and the core at each segment using an ohmmeter.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6ZZW00002378.GIF\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"absmiddle\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6ZZW00002378.GIF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>If there is continuity, replace the armature.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>            2. Verify that there is no continuity between the commutator and the shaft using an ohmmeter.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6ZZW00002379.GIF\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"absmiddle\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6ZZW00002379.GIF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>If there is continuity, replace the armature.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>            3. Place the armature on V\u2013blocks, and measure the runout using a dial indicator.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6ZZW00002380.GIF\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"absmiddle\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6ZZW00002380.GIF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>If not within specification, replace the armature.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n                <b>Starter armature runout<\/b><\/p>\n<li>\n<p>0.1 mm {0.004 in} max.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>            4. Measure the commutator diameter.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6ZZW00002381.GIF\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"absmiddle\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6ZZW00002381.GIF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>If not within the minimum specification, replace the armature.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n                <b>Starter commutator diameter<\/b><\/p>\n<li>\n<p>Standard: 29.4 mm {1.16 in}<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Minimum: 28.8 mm {1.13 in}<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>            5. Measure the segment groove depth of the commutator.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6ZZW00002382.GIF\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"absmiddle\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6ZZW00002382.GIF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>If not within the minimum specification, undercut the grooves to the standard depth.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n                <b>Segment groove depth of starter commutator<\/b><\/p>\n<li>\n<p>Standard: 0.5 mm {0.02 in}<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Minimum: 0.2 mm {0.008 in}<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>          <a name=\"id0119h780030009\" id=\"id0119h780030009\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h5>Magnetic switch<\/h5>\n<p>            1. Inspect for continuity between terminals S and M using an ohmmeter.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6XUW00002346.GIF\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"absmiddle\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6XUW00002346.GIF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>If there is no continuity, replace the magnetic switch.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>            2. Inspect for continuity between terminal S and the body using an ohmmeter.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6XUW00002347.GIF\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"absmiddle\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6XUW00002347.GIF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>If there is no continuity, replace the magnetic switch.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>            3. Verify that there is no continuity between terminals M and B using an ohmmeter.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6XUW00002348.GIF\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"absmiddle\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6XUW00002348.GIF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>If there is continuity, replace the magnetic switch.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>          <a name=\"id0119h780030010\" id=\"id0119h780030010\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h5>Brush and brush holder<\/h5>\n<p>            1. Verify that there is no continuity between each insulated brush and plate using an ohmmeter.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6ZZW00002386.GIF\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"absmiddle\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM6ZZW00002386.GIF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>If there is continuity, replace the brush holder.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>            2.
