STARTER [SKYACTIV-G 2.0]

Purpose, Function

  • The starter rotates the crankshaft via the ring gear of the flywheel (MT)/drive plate (AT) at engine start and the engine starts autonomous operation.

Construction

  • The starter is located on the left rear side of the engine.

  • The coaxial reduction type starter increases generated torque when cranking for an optimum engine start.

  • The starter has the following parts:

Operation

  • Starter terminal 1A is constantly connected (1) to the battery.

  • The contact point is on (2) when the starter relay coil is energized based on the signals from the start stop unit.

  • Electric current flows in the pull-in coil and holding coil from starter terminal 2A which generates (3) electromagnetic power and moves the plunger.

At this time, the lever operates and the pinion gear moves, and depending on the current via the pull-in coil the motor rotates (3) slowly, causing the pinion gear to engage with the ring gear (flywheel (MT)/drive plate (AT)).

  • The main switch is turned on (4) and large amounts of electricity flow to the motor.

  • The motor rotates (5) strongly, the pinion gear drives the ring gear (flywheel (MT)/drive plate (AT)) which causes the crankshaft to rotate and the engine starts autonomous operation.

At this time, current does not flow in the pull-in coil, and the plunger maintains the main switch is ON condition depending on the electromagnetic power generated in the holding coil current.

  • When the engine starts autonomous operation, the starter relay contact point turns off (6) based on the signals from the start stop unit.

  • Electromagnetic power is generated (7) when current flows to the pull-in coil and holding coil via terminal M from terminal 1A. The electromagnetic power is eliminated because the current flowing to the pull-in coil and the current flowing to the holding coil flow in opposite directions and the plunger returns (7) to its original position.

At this time, the lever operates and the pinion gear returns to its original position, and the main switch turns off and the motor stops.

Fail-safe

  • Not applicable
